Falklands : South Georgia Visitor's Guide Launched in Stanley
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 27.04.2006 (Article Archived on 11.05.2006)

Sally Poncet and Kim Crosbie have authored the first ever guide for visitors to South Georgia.

SOUTH GEORGIA VISITORS GUIDE

By J. Brock (FINN)

A reception to launch a “Visitor’s Guide to South Georgia,” took place at Government House in Stanley at 1800hrs on Wednesday, 26th of April 2006.  The authors, Mrs. Sally Poncet and Kim Crosbie were present to sell copies of the guide to interested guests.  In his remarks, H. E. the Governor of the Falkland Islands and Commissioner of South Georgia, Mr. Howard Pearce  said that it was good to see so many people here in Stanley with an interest in what he described as a fantastic island.

“We are here to mark the publication of the first ever guide book about South Georgia.  It’s remarkable tat this is the first such publication.  People have been visiting South Georgia for many, many years but many of them wanted to keep the secret to themselves.

I am delighted to say that Sally Poncet and Kim Crosbie are here and want to share their pleasure and joy about South Georgia.  Sally has been involved with South Georgia for many years and has given birth to one son down there.

We took our daughter Suzanna to South Georgia in March.  I think she probably was the youngest person there for quite some time.  We thought quite seriously about going down there to .. ah.  However, my wife dissuaded me but Sally was brave enough to go through that experience.

As all of you will know this is a fantastic place and it really is a great achievement to have produced this wonderful book.”

Sally and Kim will not be making any money from the guide and neither will the Government of South Georgia, who contributed funds.  All profits will go to environmental causes.  South Georgia is a fantastic environment and those who work there – the Government especially, are interested in the environment of that fragile island and its ecosystem.

Interested people can purchase the “Visitors Guide to South Georgia” in the Capstan Gift Shop and the Jetty Centre.

The “Visitors Guide to South Georgia” contains 180 pages of text and photographs of the landing areas where IAATO tour operators land their passengers.  There is a handy locator with features and pointers along with descriptions of the location and main features, landform climate and habitat as well as wildlife.  Also included are maps with elevations of each area.  There are also special features, for example on Wandering Albatross, Long-line Fisheries and Seabirds and stamps.

Round the World yachtswoman Miss Ellen Macarthur has endorsed the guide.
