PEACEFUL PASSING FOR THE IRON LADY

By J. Brock (FINN)

News of Margaret Thatcher’s passing reached the Falklands just before 0800hrs on Monday morning and with it a sense of loss for a Falklands heroine. She will be forever remembered in the Islands for her decisiveness in sending a task force to liberate our home following the Argentine invasion in 1982.

In 1983, out of sheer gratitude, she was granted the Freedom of the Falkland Islands and she reciprocated in 1992 when she presented the Falkland Islands Community School with a Trophy – the Maggie – for the leading graduating student.

Falkland Islanders will sorely miss her friendship and support, and we will always be grateful for deciding to send the task force to liberate them.

A book of condolence for the family of Baroness Thatcher will be open to the community from 0800 on Tuesday 9th April.  The book will be located in the entrance porch of Gilbert House, and will be accessible both in and out of office hours.  The book will close on Friday 19th April at 1630hrs, when arrangements will be made for the book to be accessible in Camp, details to be confirmed.  Your messages and memories will be an important record of the high regard and affection in which she was held by the people of the Falkland Islands.

The thoughts and deepest sympathies of all Falkland Islanders are with her family and friends at this sad time.
