St Helena : PUBLIC TRANSPORT TRIAL RUN
Submitted by Saint Helena Herald (Public Relations Information Office) 03.02.2013 (Article Archived on 03.03.2013)

One of the objectives in St Helena’s Sustainable Development plan is to facilitate private, public, tourist and business development across the Island through an improved public transport system.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT TRIAL RUN

One of the objectives in St Helena’s Sustainable Development plan is to facilitate private, public, tourist and business development across the Island through an improved public transport system.

A review of the current public transport system was carried out last year. One of the recommendations was that the home to duty transport for health shift workers and the public transport system be combined to provide a more comprehensive system, which would meet the needs of home to duty for shift workers, be available to the public – and provide better Island coverage and cross country travel.

A new trial system will operate from 11 February 2013 until the end of July 2013 to replace routes A, B, C and Ruperts. Joshua’s Taxis has been successful in the public bid to operate the trial service. During the trial, the existing service to Blue Hill and Sandy Bay will continue to be operated by Solomons and Colins Garage.

The new transport system aims to provide a cost effective service, and to ensure that subsidy for transport is targeted where most needed, offering better access to customers as well as providing more flexible working hours.

During the trial period, customer data will be collected to look at passenger demand and feedback is welcomed from all customers. All views and data will then be taken into account to inform any refinements to the service after July 2013.

An additional note for customers using the Public Transport System, from 1 -10 February, Johsua’s Taxis will operate the existing bus routes A,B, C and the Ruperts trips (these routes and times will not alter until the trial begins on 11 February.)

A new timetable and ticket prices for the trial period will be released and be widely distributed later this week.
