St Helena: FIVE STUDENTS DEPARTING FOR UNIVERSITY

Leaving before the end of August and bound for the UK are five former students of Prince Andrew School.

Four of these students will be attending University and one will be undertaking vocational training.

Leonie Ellick will study Business Management & (Marketing) at Bath Spa University, Neil Francis will study his Economics and Finance degree with the University of Brighton and Zedella Young will study for her BA/BSc (Hons) in Human Geography and Journalism/Media with the University of Hertfordshire.

Rebecca Lawrence who has been awarded a five year scholarship under the Commonwealth Scholarship Awards will study for a Veterinary Medicine and Surgery degree at the University of Nottingham.

Jamie Peters has part sponsorship from Enterprise St Helena and will undertake his Motor Vehicle Engineering and Autobody and Paint Refinishing training with Barnfield College in Bedfordshire.

To honour the achievements of these five students a reception was hosted by His Excellency, Governor and Mrs Capes at Plantation House on Wednesday 8th August 2012. Around 50 guests were invited including family, friends and members of the Education and Employment Directorate.

In His Excellency’s address to the students Governor Capes said:

“I believe this is the largest contingent ever going from St Helena to study in an academic year and I hope that your success will encourage and motivate other young people at Prince Andrew School to follow your example.

“St Helena is set for so much change in the years ahead as we expand the economy, taking advantage of the airport project. There will be so many new opportunities for rewarding careers, here in St Helena, and you will be well placed to make the most of those opportunities.

“We are all very proud of your achievements and we wish you well. Enjoy it all. Make the most of your time, study hard and also enjoy what the UK has to offer.”

Head-teacher of Prince Andrew School, Abraham Swart, also encouraged the students to do well with the opportunities they have been given, to never forget where they came from and all the people who have supported them. English Teacher at Prince Andrew School, Kathy Squires, also expressed how proud she was of the students and how they have also done St Helena proud.

The evening was rounded off with light refreshments and good conversation.
