NEW CHIEF MAGISTRATE TAKES OATHS OF OFFICE
Mr John MacRitchie, the new Chief Magistrate, has arrived on St Helena and yesterday took the Oaths of Office in the presence of Governor Capes at HE’s Office in the Castle, Jamestown
John has been appointed as Chief Magistrate for five years and in his role will attend any Magistrates’ Court proceedings, train and mentor Justices of the Peace and the Officers who administer the Court system, and also carry out the role of Coroner, Land Registrar and later this year, Media Standards Commissioner.
John said:
“The people of St Helena have been extremely welcoming and I am very much looking forward to carrying out the various offices to which I have been appointed.
“It is clear to me already that I am to join an excellent team of existing Magistrates. To have an independent and legally qualified Chief Magistrate on the island will, I hope, add even further to the public confidence that exists in our legal system at present.”
