FALKLANDS QUEEN’S CERTIFICATE AND BADGE OF HONOUR RECIPIENTS NAMED

By J. Brock (FINN)

Falkland Islanders who have given outstanding service to the community have this year been awarded of the Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour.  According to a press release from Government House, His Excellency the Governor, acting on the advice of Executive Council, is pleased to announce on this Falkland Day, the first awards to:

-       Mr William Edward Bowles for his services on behalf of those interned by Argentine forces in Goose Green in May 1982 and for his encouragement of young people interested in woodworking and carpentry.

-       Mr Stephen Leslie Burston and Mrs Kathleen Burston for their work in running the Shack youth club for the under 15s.

The award ceremony for Mr Bowles will be held at Government House on Tuesday 17 August.  That for Mr and Mrs Burston will be arranged for a later date.

The Queen’s Certificate and accompanying Badge of Honour is a new local honour, approved by Her Majesty the Queen, to allow the Falkland Island Government to recognise those having connections with the Falkland Islands who have, by their loyalty and meritorious conduct, provided services of exceptional benefit to the people of the Falkland Islands.

The Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour are awarded by HE the Governor acting on the advice of Executive Council.  It is awarded annually on Falkland Day (14 August) which commemorates the first recorded sighting of the Falkland Islands in 1592.  The number of recipients will normally be restricted to three a year.  The names of Queen’s Certificate recipients will be published in the Official Gazette.

The Honour is already awarded in other Overseas Territories such as Anguilla, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Gibraltar and Montserrat.  The award of the Queen’s Certificate and Badge of Honour does not replace but is additional to the award of other Honours, such as the OBE and MBE, which for the Diplomatic and Overseas List are awarded by Her Majesty the Queen on the recommendation of the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary.
