Legislative Council to meet Formally on 2 August 2010

A Formal Session of the Legislative Council will be held in the Court House in Jamestown on Monday, 2 August 2010 at 10 am.

A number of Sessional Papers will be tabled including the SHG Financial and Currency Fund Financial Statements and the Chief Auditor’s Management Letters for the year ended 31 March 2009; the St Helena Audit Services Value for Money Reports to be presented by the Hon Financial Secretary; the report of the Independent Commission to Review the Recommendations of Remuneration to Councillors, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker and a Bill for Legislative Council (Remuneration and Allowances) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2010.

The Legislative Council (Remuneration and Allowances) Ordinance, 2010, which came into force on 1 April 2010, fixes the rates of remuneration and allowances payable to Councillors and prescribes other benefits to which they are entitled. These rates were based on the recommendations contained in an Independent Report as required by section 72 of the Constitution.  Following a more recent review of these recommendations by a new Independent Commission, appointed by the Governor, certain recommendations for amendment to the current rates and benefits were put forward.  The Bill for Legislative Council (Remuneration and Allowances) (Amendment) Ordinance 2010 which is being presented at this session, gives effect to these recommendations.

Also being presented is the Income Tax Ordinance, 2009 the purpose of which is to amend the requirement relating to registration of business particulars with the Commissioner of Income Tax.

Other business for the day will be Confirmation of the Proceedings of Legislative Council Meetings held during the period 26 June  – 13 November 2009.

Council will also deal with 7 Motions and 12 Questions.

It is envisaged that this will be a one day session.
