Submitted by Saint Helena Herald (Nathan Prince) 29.07.2010 (Article Archived on 19.08.2010)

At approximately 1.30pm this afternoon, at the General Hospital, His Excellency Governor Andrew Gurr presented an Award of the Certificate and Badge of Honour to Mr Robert Macmillian Robertson,

AWARD OF CERTIFICATE AND BADGE OF HONOUR TO MR ROBERT MACMILLAN ROBERTSON

At approximately 1.30pm this afternoon, at the General Hospital, His Excellency Governor Andrew Gurr presented an Award of the Certificate and Badge of Honour to Mr Robert Macmillian Robertson, in the presence of his wife Dulcie, Mrs Gurr, his sister-in-law Peggy, close friends Gordon and Ruth Pridham and Councillor Mervyn Yon.

In presenting the Award his Excellency said:

“I am pleased to be able to award the Certificate and Badge of Honour to Mr Robert Robertson, in recognition of his contribution to society on St Helena including in particular his services as a Member of the Legislative Council.

Robert, more affectionately known as Bobby, was first elected as a Member of the Legislative Council for the Longwood Electoral Area in 1993 and retained his seat on the Legislative Council in three subsequent General Elections, retiring only in 2009 after serving for a total of 16 years.

During his term of office as a Councillor, Bobby served on a number of Council Committees, which included the Education and Public Health and Social Services Committees.  He was also a reserve Member for the Employment and Social Security Committee.

Supported by his wife Dulcie, Bobby has shown empathy and concern for the less fortunate in our community.  He is known for his charitable work, especially the sourcing of goods, including clothing and food, for distribution on Island for which there is always much appreciation.  His connection with the people in his representational role as a Councillor was clearly demonstrated by his successive re-election to Council on three occasions.

Bobby is also a Member of the St Helena Community Help Association and has a special interest in philosophy, poetry writing and Island development”.

Mr Robertson, in accepting the Award, expressed his gratitude to the Governor and to the people of the island and said “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart”.
