BRITISH FORCES SOUTH ATLANTIC ISLANDS’ THISTLE PULL

Media Ops

Personnel serving at the Mount Pleasant Complex have been out battling thistles at Mare Harbour and Bertha’s Beach in support of the Falklands Conservation Society’s programme.

A team of 20-30 determined thistle slayers moved efficiently across the harbour and beach, eradicating swathes of the non-native invaders.  A regular feature of Falklands and Mount Pleasant life, the only way to prevent the continued spread of these hardy and robust weeds is removal, otherwise they compete aggressively with the native wildlife and plants and become tangled in the fleece of local sheep.

Sarah Chaloner said: "There were quite a lot of thistles to clear, spread over a substantial area but knowing that it helps the local environment makes it more than worthwhile."
