Ascension : Message For Ascension Island Councillors
Submitted by The Islander (Ascension Island Government) 30.10.2008 (Article Archived on 13.11.2008)

I would like to offer my congratulations to you all on your election as Ascension Island Councillors.

I would like to offer my congratulations to you all on your election as Ascension Island Councillors.

I am delighted that sufficient numbers of people had stepped forward to allow an election to take place earlier this month.  I firmly believe that a democratically elected Council represents the best means for all those who live and work on the island to be involved in taking decisions on matters which have an impact on their lives.

I am aware that over the past 18 months, the Governor has benefitted from consultation with and advice from a wide range of people, for which he and I are most grateful.  I should particularly like to thank members of the advisory group who gave their time and energy to ensure that the Governor and the FCO continued to receive a considered opinion on a number of very important issues for the island.  But, an elected body has to be better for the island than a selected one and it is first and foremost to the elected body that the Governor will look for advice.

I know that there is a good deal of work for the Council to consider in the coming months. I am aware that we will be asking you to consider several significant reports and pieces of legislation during your time in Office.  The Governor and Administrator are looking forward to working with you very much.  You will have our full support to help carry out your responsibilities for the benefit of Ascension Island.

I know from my own experience that public service can be very rewarding and enjoyable, and I am sure that you will share the same experience in the months ahead.

Gillian Merron, MP

Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State

Foreign and Commonwealth Office
