Falklands : Falklands Observe 'Peat Cutting Monday'
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 09.10.2008 (Article Archived on 23.10.2008)

Peat cutting has declined since people switched to Kero or Diesel for heating. However, with fuel prices as they are, those on peat have an advantage.

PEAT CUTTING MONDAY

An Editorial by J. Brock (FINN)

Yesterday was Peat Cutting Monday and hopefully those who are still on peat were able to cut some.  The rest of us are feeling relief that the worst of the winter is over and (hopefully) we can turn our heating off for a spell.  With the price of crude declining, locally the price of hydrocarbons products will decline once stocks bought in at higher prices are used up.

The Northern Hemisphere is about to feel the brunt of heating costs and the distinct possibility that people will go cold this winter looms over people here with relatives in the UK.

During our summer months it is good to think of investing in solar and wind power for some of our energy costs.  A quick question revealed that people here in the Falklands would use an electric vehicle to go around town.  There are some vehicles with good ranges and cost-effective top-up costs.  It’s worth a thought for those who want to save money and eliminate carbon emissions.
