Press Release

FIG Meet with Cable & Wireless

On Wednesday 13th August FIG represented by Chief Executive Tim Thorogood, Government Secretary Peter King and Councillor Mike Summers met with Aaron Richardson, Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless South Atlantic Ltd. The meeting was requested by FIG consequent to an announcement by C&W of their intention to remove the directory enquiry service from the Falklands to St Helena, and the possible effect on employment.

C&W advised FIG that for the four persons affected three potential alternative roles have already identified within the company, and the fourth would be made redundant in accordance with both Falklands and UK redundancy law. C&W further advised that following this re-organisation the employment headcount at C&W remains one more than the base set in November 2006 after the C&W SA reorganisation at that time.  Assurances were given that the level of DQ service would not be affected. C&W were requested by FIG to discuss with the FIG Fisheries Department the arrangements for the ship to shore radio watch keeping service contracted to C&W.

Firm assurance was given by C&W that there are no plans for further redundancies, and that in particular there are no plans for dispensing with the watch keeping service. Technical remoting of core alarm services is being studied during off-peak hours, but it is not envisioned that this will result in a headcount reduction in the Watch keeping department.

A Cable & Wireless users group including members of the public and business communities is to be convened next month to provide a greater exchange of information and views between service provider and customers; members of the public will be asked shortly to advise interest in participation in this forum. C&W and FIG will also be meeting separately to review C&W operating revenues and costs as allowed for under the Telecommunications License, and considering any C&W requests for tariff review.

In other Cable & Wireless news the company reported on Monday that an ‘offshore server’ had been clogging up their e-mail system and that they could not determine what was spam and what wasn’t.   The problem has been fixed for now.
