SEAT BELT PRESS RELEASE
Throughout July Police have been involved in a month long period of public awareness raising to remind motorists of the need and legal requirement to wear seatbelts when driving or as a passenger in a vehicle.
During this period, all those seen and stopped by Police whilst not wearing seat belts have been advised that they have been breaking the law, but during this period nobody has been reported for summons.
As widely advertised, the second phase of this road safety campaign commences with effect from 1st August 2008 from which time Police will be strictly enforcing all seat belt infringements by reporting offenders for seat belt – and any other motoring offences revealed.
During the early period of July a high percentage of drivers were seen not to be wearing seat belts. 40 offenders were advised in the first hour! It is very encouraging to note that as the month has progressed it is clear that people have been taking notice of the seat belt campaign, so that a much higher amount of compliance with legislation has been observed.
Superintendent Paul Elliott says
”Seat belts have been proved to have saved countless lives since their introduction, and indeed were introduced to the Falkland Islands following tragic loss of life on our own roads that it is believed could have been prevented by simply wearing a seat belt. This campaign is not about persecuting motorists, it’s about taking positive action to improve road safety”
It is hoped that motorists will understand the requirement and fully respect the law regarding seat belt use and that police will not be required to prosecute many motorists for this offence to achieve widespread compliance.
However motorists are advised that Police officers will report motorists for all seat belt offences from 1st August and thereafter.
