  • BY ELECTION –WEST ELECTORAL AREA

As a result of the resignation of Councillor John Reid from Legislative Council, effective from 1 August, 2008, a By-Election will shortly be held in the West Electoral Area.

The Writ calling upon the Returning Officer, to conduct the By-Election, will be issued by His Excellency the Governor on Friday 1 August. The Writ will state that Nomination Day will be Friday 8 August and Polling Day, Wednesday 3 September.

It is essential that the person who is elected is a true representative of the people of the West Electoral Area and there will be twenty five days for candidates to canvass the electorate once nominations have been received on 8th August.

Every nomination must be made separately on the prescribed form. The form must be signed by a Proposer, a Seconder and at least five supporters, all of whom must be registered electors in the West Electoral Area. The signatures of the supporters must be witnessed and the signatures of the Proposer and Seconder must be witnessed by a Justice of the Peace. Nomination Forms are available from the Assistant Returning Officer at the Office of the Chief Secretary. Forms will also be made available in various shops and Community Centres in the West Electoral Area.

You can approach as many people as you like, as long as they are listed in the 2008 Register of Electors. Remember, your candidate need not live in the West Electoral Area. Candidates from any area of the Island are acceptable. So, start thinking now about who YOU want to represent you!

Keep listening to your radios for regular updates on the By Election process. Further details will also be given in next week’s newspapers.
