Falklands : Hydrocarbons Daily Record Wednesday, 18 June 2008
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 19.06.2008 (Article Archived on 03.07.2008)

The official reason why Light Sweet Crude prices increased significantly today is the mixed weekly inventory report from the US Department of Energy Administration. We are still up in gasoline supplies this year over last year at this time when crude prices ranged around $67.00 per barrel.

HYDROCARBONS DAILY RECORD WEDNESDAY, 18 JUNE 2008

By J. Brock (FINN)

At 1930hrs LMT on Wednesday, 18 June 2008 Light Sweet Crude was trading at $136.68 up  $2.67 on the New York Mercantile Exchange.  Brent Crude was trading at $132.83 down 89 Cents on London’s ICE Futures Market.

ANALYSIS:

The official reason why Light Sweet Crude prices increased significantly today is the mixed weekly inventory report from the US Department of Energy Administration.  We are still up in gasoline supplies this year over last year at this time when crude prices ranged around $67.00 per barrel.

The Saudi production increase should have brought the price down but for reasons that speculators know they increased instead.  Another factor that could have caused prices to go down is the opening up of offshore drilling in the United States.

What could have caused an increase in crude prices hasn’t been mentioned as a factor and that is the tight rig/drill-ship market and the fact that any exploration and extraction of crude offshore US would mean the availability of proper drilling equipment.  Seismic surveys updating data already acquired takes time.  Try five years to complete licensing and the seismic – and that’s a speedy estimate.

Oil prices softened Wednesday on news that US stockpiles had declined last week roughly in line with expectations and as the market mulled a possible output hike by Saudi Arabia. New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for July delivery, fell $1.51 to $132.50 per barrel in late afternoon European trading.
