Press Release

New Shipping Officer Settles In

The St Helena Government has appointed Belinda Beard to be Shipping Officer within the Office of the Governor.

Commenting today, she said: “It is good to be on St Helena again, and I am enjoying the role of Shipping Officer. It is also a delight to be back with my friends and family, particularly my father Brian, Aunty Sylvia, and Uncles Rex and Hensel who have done so much to help me settle back in.”

As Shipping Officer, Belinda will be responsible for facilitating the efficient and economic running of the shipping service to St Helena. Primarily, she will be involved in advising the Governor and Executive Council on shipping policy including on passenger management and freight issues. Belinda will also work closely with St Helena Line to monitor the performance of the shipping service against an agreed business plan and to alert the Governor and Executive Council to any potential deviations from this. In addition, she will ensure effective communications on shipping matters between key stakeholders; analyse passenger numbers and freight shipments; and review and make recommendations on improving the shipping service.

Belinda has worked in the private sector for the last 27 years, and during this time she has been involved with implementing, co-ordinating, developing and managing various projects and systems. She has experience with business planning and developing strategies as well as marketing, advertising, accounting, website management, offering IT technical support, and human resource management.

Belinda’s career commenced with British Aerospace in Hertfordshire, UK where she worked as a Training Support Officer and Personal Assistant. From here she moved to Berkshire to work for Compass International as a Depot Night Manager and Traffic Officer Supervisor. Her career then took her to work with FIAT as Logistics Manager in their press office.

It was in 1992 that Belinda moved back to Hampshire to work as Managing Director of her own business, Builders Works Services Ltd.

Belinda decided to relocate to Australia in 1995 where she worked in a variety of management positions with companies such as Total Concept Exhibitions, Aventis Pharama, QEK, and ManheimFowles.
