Departing on the cruise ship, Hebridean Spirit, was short term Government Economist, Huib Poot. Huib came to St Helena from the Netherlands and the Department for International Development funded his visit.
Huib has been working with the St Helena Government since August last year and was based in the Office of the Chief Secretary. During his stay, he played a key role in working on the Draft Sustainable Development Plan, which is soon to be finalised. Huib was able to complete the first draft of the plan and this has been used for public consultation. The plan takes into consideration what the Island needs to do over the next three years.
Along with the Accountant, Financial Analysis Planning, Huib also worked with Government departments on preparing business plans. In particular he was concentrating on whether plans complied with the Draft SDP.
In December of last year, DFID interviewed for a full term Government Economist but was unable to select a suitable candidate. DFID is, however seeking to fill this post by alternative means.
