Ascension : New Crown Counsel for Ascension Island
Submitted by The Islander (Juanita Brock) 04.01.2007 (Article Archived on 18.01.2007)

Ms Lorna Drummond has been appointed to the office of Crown Counsel for Ascension Island.

Appointment of Crown Counsel for Ascension

Following the recent recruitment exercise, Ms Lorna Drummond has been appointed to the office of Crown Counsel for Ascension; it is expected that Ms Drummond will take up her appointment in March 2007.  She is currently self-employed as an Advocate in Scotland, and has previously worked as Assistant Scottish Parliamentary Counsel and as Legal Secretary to the Scottish Law Officers.  Ms Drummond is married to an artist, and has two daughters aged 6 and 3.

Crown Counsel, unlike the former Legal Adviser, will be a full time Government lawyer, reporting directly to the Attorney General.  She will not be available to provide legal advice to the public; but will, provided there is no conflict of interest, be able to assist Lay Advocates in their work.

Lay Advocates are also able to call upon the Public Solicitor in St. Helena for assistance, and arrangements are available (in suitable cases, where neither Crown Counsel nor the Public Solicitor can assist) for them to enlist the assistance of lawyers in the United Kingdom.
