The public will be aware from a press release issued on 8 March 2012, that St Helena Government took the decision to close the Head O’Wain and Sandy Bay Clinics with effect from 1 April 2012, as a direct result of the need to make efficiency savings. These locations were identified as a result of low attendance and consequent inefficient use of medical and nursing staff time.
There has been public concern regarding the need for a more robust transport system to enable people, particularly the elderly, to easily access alternative clinics. As a result, balancing the needs of local residents against the need to economise, SHG has decided to allow the Sandy Bay Clinic to remain in operation until 31 May 2012, during which time regular and reliable public transport alternatives will be examined. A further update will be provided in due course.
