Busy times for Visiting Optometrist!

A familiar face to the Island, Optometrist, Priscilla Brown has spent several months on the island and is due to return next year.

Priscilla’s annual visits are to provide primary eye-care services to the population of St Helena. While here Priscilla also supplies spectacles and other optical aids required by the public and takes retinal photographs.

During the three months spent on the island, from 17th January to 12th April, Priscilla saw just under a thousand patients. This included those seen for Diabetic Retinopathy screening, and those attending the clinic provided on board the RMS for members of the crew.

Priscilla also took 162 retinal photographs on the island and issued 398 pairs of spectacles.

Priscilla reported that the demand for spectacles remains stable year on year. The number of patients seen during this 2011 visit was also similar to that of last year and 2009.

Priscilla’s visits come under the DfID funded Healthlink 3 Project which provides essential human resources for health and social care for St Helena and other healthcare support.
