Falklands : Falklands News Round-up from FIBS
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 30.09.2002 (Article Archived on 28.10.2002)

In a rare verdict for the Falklands, a man was found not guilty of speeding in the Magistrate's Court this morning.

FIBS NEWS DIRECT, THURSDAY, 26 September 2002

NOT GUILTY FOR MILITARY MAN:

A Military man was found not guilty of speeding yesterday. PTE Matthew Lee appeared before JPs Tim Blake, Marj McPhee and Mario Zuvic. PTE Lee had been recorded by two Police Officers, allegedly driving a Land-rover at 55 MPH on the MPA Road. Defence Council, Richard Marlor, questioned the accuracy of the measurement taken by the Police speed gun., suggesting that the police vehicle was moving at the time, which would have created a false reading. The two Police Officers denied this. Mr. Marlor also suggested the possibility of a fault in the speed gun itself, which had been tested 10 minutes before the reading was taken but not immediately before. JP, Tim Blake said that as the |Police had not measured the stretch of road on which the defendant was accused of speeding. It was impossible to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the reading was correct. Therefore, PTE Lee was acquitted of the charge.

PRICE BATTLE:

Visits to Volunteer Point, which were booked before September this year will still be charged at £10.00. It was decided recently that prices for overseas visitors would be increased to £15.00 per head. However, after discussion between Osmond Smith and tour guides using the site, those people who booked before this month will not have to pay the extra £5.00. Local visitors to Volunteer Point will still be charged only £10.00 while children under 10 will visit for free. People between the ages of 10 and 16 will be charged £7.50. The money towards increased costs will go towards improvements on the track and the provision of visitor facilities. Mr. Smith has said that he wants to work with the tour guides to promote both tourism and the protection of the birds at Volunteer Point.

HOW MUCH FOR THAT KITCHEN?

Something else that was brought up recently was the cost of the kitchen at Port Howard. The Kitchen itself cost around £20,000.00 and consists of two large ovens, a blast freezer, vacuum packing unit, low energy fridges and deep-fat fryers and more. The Managing Director of FIDC, Richard Baker, said that they had a building that wasn’t being used and they came up with a few ideas for it with the best of these being an industrial kitchen that could be used by everyone. He also said it would not be just for the preparation of vegetables and preserves but for people who might want to start up a business and goose breasts would be an example. The idea of the kitchen is to look more at the production of local produce to sell in Stanley and around the Camp.

WATERFRONT:

The first of October could see the new owners of the Waterfront open for business. Paul and Shula Phillips bought the property which used to be known as Emma’s Guest House. And, on Tuesday, they were granted a Restaurant and Residential Licence. When they do open, they will be operating as a bed and breakfast, tea rooms and they also will be serving lunches.

STRUT YOUR STUFF:

Time is running out if you want to strut your stuff at the Town Hall on Friday night. Doors open at 2000. Tickets are still available from Falklands Conservation and at FIBS.
