Corporal Sets New Course Record in the Falklands

Cpl Stephen Frear

Corporal Frear recently participated in the Stanley Marathon, not only winning the event outright but also setting a new course record.

Corporal Steve Frear, attached to Receipt and Dispatch, Supply and Air Movements Squadron at Mount Pleasant Complex from RAF Benson, was already a keen cross country and fell runner but had never attempted a marathon before.

On 14 February 2010, he attempted the Cape Pembroke Half Marathon, a testing course covering both road, track and cross country, and won.  He completed the course in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 5 seconds, beating the previous record by 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

A month later, he confidently set out against gusting winds, rain and sleet, completing the course in 2 hours, 43 minutes and 5 seconds, beating the previous record by an impressive 12 minutes and 41 seconds.  In the opinion of some of the more experienced runners, the impact of the weather could even have added 10-15 minutes to his time.

Stanley Marathon is the most southerly marathon in the world and attracted numerous international as well as local runners every year.  It also allows relay teams to participate and sees the whole of Stanley turn out to support competitors.
