GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE REPORT FOR MARCH 2010

By J. Brock (FINN)

A meeting of the General Purposes Committee took place on Wednesday, 24 March 2010 at Gilbert House.  On Friday, 26 March Mrs Sharon Halford, MLA, briefed the media on what happened at that meeting.

On the agenda were visits by FCO Officials, Colin Roberts and Victor Clark.  Assembly Members also met with the Director of Health and Education and discussed a memorial to Jon Clark, RAF plans to commemorate the Battle of Britain and the Holiday Credit Scheme.

Holiday Credit Scheme:

Assembly Members wish to remind people that the scheme comes to an end at the end of June and any money left will return to the treasury.

Jon Clark:

Staff at the Fisheries Department are to remember Jon Clark by pacing a small plaque on the base of one of the leading lights.  It is not thought that any formal approval is needed to do this.

New Airframe:

Reports have been spread about the RAF having an Airbus 380 for the airbridge.  Sharon Halford MLA hasn’t heard anything officially.

Immigration:

Gavin Short submitted an EXCO paper about a new body to look at all aspects of immigration.  There is already a body.  Dick Sawle is head of that body but hasn’t returned to the Islands.  Next Exco will consider the paper.

FCO Officials:

Members of Legislative Assembly met with Senior FCO Official, Chris Roberts and Falklands Desk Officer, Victor Clark.  There was also mention of around 200 resignations from Parliament and/or those who will not run again.  This will mean a lot of new people for Sukey Cameron to work with and for Members of Legislative Assembly to speak with reference Self Determination for Falkland Islanders.

Senior Medical Officer:

The Senior Medical Officer reported that Dr Barry Elsby was on sabbatical.  He will spend three months away and three months back for three to keep up with his colon exam work.  Dr Davis is away in New Zealand for two years (non paid).  Dr Edwards is in the UK for the winter and will return for the summer.  Recruitment is poor due to the fact that Doctors specialise but general practitioners with Obstetrics qualifications are needed in the Falklands.  The search is on for Doctors in Australia, New Zealand, Canada or wherever they can be recruited.

Tagging of cattle from birth and only tagging sheep when they are moved was also discussed.
