FALKLANDS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REPORTS ON MARCH ACTIVITIES

By J. Brock (FINN)

A meeting of the Education Board took place on Monday, 22 march 2010.  There were many items on the agenda but most relevant is the Director’s report.  The Assistant Director of Education, Mr Richard Fogherty, updated the Board on the month’s activities which included the relocation of the Education Office

The move has now been delayed until possibly June/July because it is thought an office of this type located at a Children’s Hostel was inappropriate. There is also a possibility that the Office will have to move twice which is far from ideal.

Building Human Rights Capacity training with Rosanna Mesquita and David McQuoid-Mason has been organised.  There will be general sessions plus a special session arranged so as many teachers can attend as possible.

Students from Punta Arenas are due to arrive this weekend.  Stanley House is available as back-up accommodation.  However it looks like that if Stanley House is required at all it will only be for a small number as most will be staying with host families.

Costs of Helicopter flights have now been clarified. It was also discovered that FIGAS had made an error and a refund has been given.  There shouldn’t be a requirement for extra funding for next year now.

We have had visits from a number of people over the recent months.

Helen Wakeling – Occupational Therapist visited for a week and did a lot of work while she was here.  Hopefully she can visit again in the future.  Linda Fisher – Chief Executive of Services Children Education visited from MPA. Vicky Slomins – A Specialist in working with Autistic Children is visiting this week. Also the Deputy Chief of Staff will be visiting.

Mr Fogherty was pleased to inform members that Jock Elliot had completed a Level 5 Diploma in Management.

The Valentine’s Ball organised by the Apprentices went very well.  They did a good job with the organisation of the ball and the clearing up after the event.

Phase 2 of the Training Centre (Ex Old Plumbers Workshop) is almost complete.   The road is an essential part and hopefully this will be done in late April.

KL suggested that members should visit the Schools and the Training Centre in the near future.

It was agreed that a visit to one of the Units could be arranged to take place after the next Education Board meeting.
