Falklands : Fuel Shortage Means Extra Business for SSL
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 19.02.2004 (Article Archived on 22.04.2004)

Ushuaia is out of fuel and cruise vessels are coming to Stanley for Bunkers.

FUEL SHORTAGE MEANS EXTRA BUSINESS FOR STANLEY SERVICES

By J. Brock (FINN)

Numerous cruise vessels have been let down due to a severe lack of fuel in Ushuaia, the port where they had hoped to take on fuel for their annual trip north for the next stage of the cruising season.  Robert Rowlands at Stanley Services Limited reports that he has had several enquiries of late by vessels that are nearly out of fuel, with just enough to get them to Stanley for bunkers.

“Stanley Services will do its best to see that these ships get enough fuel for the trip north,” he continued.  He also added that he had offered cruise ships guaranteed fuel at a fixed price but due to the up and coming Air Charter over-flights of Argentine airspace, they chose to avoid disappointing their clients and refuel in Ushuaia.” With no fuel, cruises would have to be cancelled,” Mr. Rowlands said.  It was something that no one thought about when the Air Charter over-flight ban was put in place.
