ALL SET FOR STANLEY CRICKET ASSOCIATION
By J. Brock (FINN)
The new Cricket Season will begin in November, thought the forst games have not been scheduled. “We do plan, at some stage, to resurrect Cricket in Stanley,” said the new Captain, Elliot Taylforth to FIRS’ Layla Crowie.
Mr Taylforth went on to say that instead of one team, Cricket enthusiasts had formed an association. Association teams are members of the ICC or International Cricket Counsel.
ICC membership means that a Falklands team will participate in international competitions in Division 4. “We are looking for a minimum of four teams of 15 each, which is two or three times what we’ve got regularly, he continued.
“As part of the International Cricket Counsel membership, we are obliged to employ a full time development officer,” he continued. A deadline for hiring on such a person is fast approaching – winter 2010. Though the ICC will contribute towards the cost of employing this officer, the rest of the money has to be raised by other means.
The Association are looking for people who can provide a vehicle or accommodation. He added that both a local and international recruitment campaign for the post was to take place.
It is hoped that there can be a “pitch” in Stanley to ward off having to make the two-hour round trip to MPA.
Mr Taylforth says there are no age restrictions for playing Cricket so anyone who wants to come and have a go will be most welcome.
Nets began on Wednesday night with the juniors from 1700 to 1800hrs. Seniors can come after 1800hrs. The junior sessions are fully supervised.
