BUILDING HUMAN RIGHTS CAPACITY ON ST HELENA

The Human Rights Capacity Building Committee (St Helena) wishes to advise the public that two trainers from the Commonwealth Legal Education Association will be here under the Human Rights Capacity Building Project being coordinated by the Commonwealth Foundation, from 19th to 23rd October 2009. Both trainers have a wealth of experience in giving training on rights using group discussion and participation as the main teaching technique.

Training in human rights will be offered to SHG, private sector and NGOs, who met with Ms Rosanna Mesquita in 2008 when the project was initiated. The general training programme will include the following topics: i) What are human rights and where they come from; ii) how these rights apply in practice; and iii) the responsibilities to ensure that these rights are protected (such as the role of Government, Parliamentarians, the Court, national institutions, NGOs and community based organisations). In addition to this, the training programme will run special sessions on some individual rights and on including rights in policy making.

All organisations and SHG departments/officials who have expressed an interest in the training should advise the HRCBC Chair (Mrs Cathy Hopkins) or Ms Mesquita of numbers of staff / members wishing to receive training under this first Training visit. There will be further opportunity to receive training in the 2nd year of the project.

In order to offer training to potential candidates for election to Legislative Council, such persons are invited to contact Mrs Cathy Hopkins before the end of September so that they can be included in the training programme which will be drafted shortly.

Many thanks.

Mrs M A C Hopkins MBE

Chair HRCBC (St Helena )
