Executive Council and Committees Continue with Meetings

Legislative Council was dissolved on 11 September and Polling Day has been set for 4 November 2009. This makes way for the election of a new Legislative Council for St Helena and its people.

Attorney General, Ken Baddon, explained that, between now and the first meeting of the new Council, the Executive Council and the Council Committees will continue to carry out various work in relation to the business of Government. However, the Legislative Council itself cannot meet (either formally or informally) unless it is ‘recalled’ to deal with some kind of emergency.

The Executive Council will continue to meet until the new Legislative Council has its first meeting, which is likely to be in mid-November. It is likely to follow the usual pattern of meeting each alternate Tuesday to discuss various matters relating to the St Helena Government.

Five Elected Members serve on Executive Council (along with three non-voting Official Members). These elected members also chair the five Council committees: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Education, Employment and Social Security, Public Health and Social Services, and Public Works and Services. In addition to the Chairman, each committee also has a number of other Elected Members, from the last Legislative Council, who serve as members. Like the Executive Council, it is likely that the committees will continue to follow their established patterns of having regular meetings.
