Government House has announced that Mr Nigel Haywood CVO has been appointed Governor of the Falkland Islands and Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands in succession to Mr Alan Huckle. Mr Haywood will take up his appointment during September 2010.
Mr Haywood joined FCO in 1983 as a Desk Officer for Ireland, then was sent to Budapest as Second Secretary, later he became First Secretary. From 1989 to 1990 he was Desk Officer for Israel and Lebanon and then went to Johannesburg, South Africa as Deputy Consul-General. His varied career took him to Vienna as Counsellor and Deputy Head of Delegation UKDEL OSCE and on to London where he was Assistant Director of Human resources for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In 2003 he was sent to Tallinn as Ambassador before being sent to his current post in Basra, Iraq as Consul- General.
Nigel is a keen sports fisherman and one of the few speakers of Cornish. He is also a marathon runner (and tells me that he might just be persuaded to do the mid-winter swim.) He trained at Sandhurst and spent three years in the Army before leaving in 1980. He has been HM Ambassador in Tallinn, Estonia and has just completed a heavy stint as HM Consul General in Basra. He is currently doing an MSc in Biodiversity Conservation.
He is married to (Mary) Louise Haywood, who is a water-colourist and has three sons.
