INJURED FISHERMAN RESCUED AT SEA BY MILITARY AIRCRAFT
A fisherman who sustained a head injury whilst at sea today was airlifted to safety by a military search and rescue team.
The Fisherman of Spanish origin, aged 58, had been operating in the area to the north of the Falkland Isles when he sustained a head injury. Initially his condition was thought not to be serious however in light of the deteriorating sea conditions (state 5 to 6) the ship consulted with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Spain and it was decided to request the assistance of the military to evacuate the injured casualty.
Within minutes of the Joint Operations Centre receiving the request from the ship, a search and rescue team, comprising of one Seaking rescue Helicopter and one Hercules aircraft was despatched to the scene.
Squadron Leader Iain Mac Farlane who flew the Seaking helicopter said:” This was an excellent team effort across the station which enabled a speedy response. 45 knot winds, in sleet, made conditions far from ideal; however our training and team work meant that we were able to rescue the fisherman and safely deliver him to hospital in the quickest time”
The Fisherman has now been safely delivered to the King Edward Hospital at Stanley where he is receiving treatment for his injuries.
His next of kin have been informed
