St Helena: Publication of Register of Electors 2009

The St Helena Government has published a Register of Electors for use in the 2009 General Election. The register contains 2,174 names compared to 2,207 in 2007 and 2,184 in 2008.

Names have been categorised under the East and West electoral areas and under the four relevant Polling Districts in each constituency.

Returning Officer, Gillian Francis said that this will allow registered electors to continue to cast their vote in their area of residence.

Proposals have been made to make various changes to the Elections Ordinance and one is that people be allowed to register at any time in the year. If agreed by Legislative Council at the forthcoming meeting on 24 August 2008, this will provide people with a further opportunity to register in time for the 2009 elections. This would represent a change in process because, under the current law, people can only register within a specified time.

Copies of the new register can be inspected in all districts as follows:

In Jamestown at the Public Library, and the Community Centre;

In Half Tree Hollow at the Police Station, the Supermarket and the Community Centre;

In St Paul’s at the Police Station at White Gate, the Scotland Office and the Kingshurst Community Centre;

In Blue Hill at the Head O’Wain Clinic and Mrs Audrey Yon’s Shop;

In Sandy Bay at the Community Centre and at Solomons and Thorpes Shops;

In Levelwood at the Silver Hill Shop;

In Longwood at the Police Station, the Community Centre and the Supermarket;

And

In Alarm Forest at the Police Station or at the Harford Community Centre.

In addition, registers can be inspected between 9am and 12.30pm at the Office of the Registration Officer, the Castle and at the Office of the Assistant Registration Officer on Ascension from Monday’s to Fridays. Copies are also on notice boards around the Island and are available for inspection from Assistant Registration Officers.
