St Helena will be treated to another Careers Fair this year.

Careers Fair 2004

St Helena will be treated to another Careers Fair this year. Careers Fair 2004 will be held at the Consulate Hotel on Wednesday 18 February commencing at 10am, with a record number of 22 stalls.

The fair is being organised by the Employment and Social Security Department and will be the fourth of its kind, the first having been initiated in 1999 by the then Chief Employment and Social Services Officer, John MacDonald. The first fair also took place at the Consulate.

This year’s Fair will see participation from Government Departments, the Private Sector, and also, for the first time, the New Horizons Youth Project. The event is expected to go on until 8pm.

Cynthia Bennett, Interviewing Officer is the Coordinator of the Fair and she said that the stalls are being designed to provide people with information on careers. This will include what skills one would need to get a particular job if it were to become vacant, what calibre is required, and why the job is necessary. She went on to say that with such a high staff turnover, there is very much a need to have such a Fair.

The department is planning to make this a family event and, in addition to having stalls, there will be light entertainment and refreshments. Meals will also be on sale. Stalls will cover the Consulate Restaurant and Ball Room, as well as lawn.

In addition to being open to members of the public, all school children have been invited to attend the Fair.

Careers Fair is just days away, and in commenting on this big event, Cynthia said: “I do hope that people will take the opportunity to visit this fair, and make full use of all that is provided for them in the form of displays and advice and information from the people within the workplace.”
