Anglican Rector welcomes Bishop Stephen Venner’s continuing role for the Falklands

The Anglican Rector of the Falkland Islands, Dr Richard Hines has welcomed today’s announcement from Lambeth Palace UK that Bishop Stephen Venner is to continue as Anglican Bishop for the Falkland Islands.  In late February, Bishop Stephen announced his intention to retire in November but has since accepted an invitation from the Archbishop of Canterbury to serve in a new role as Bishop to Her Majesties Armed Forces.

Commenting on the announcement, Richard said: ‘Bishop Stephen was kind enough to advise me in advance of this forthcoming appointment.  I can see the sense in his continuing to act as Bishop for the Falklands, rather than finding someone else and thereby possibly duplicating some travel and effort.  In his new role he will extend his pastoral care and offer his considerable wisdom, guidance and encouragement not only to the civilian population of the Islands but also, together with the Catholic Bishop of the Forces and others, to the Chaplain and members of the armed forces serving at MPC.

Richard added, ‘I feel certain that this news about Bishop Stephen will be warmly welcomed by the Council of Christ Church Cathedral, and by all kinds of people across the Islands who have grown to value the friendship, genuine interest and prayerful commitment of Bishop Stephen and his wife Judy.
