Che Yon Qualifies as Pilot
St Helenian Scholar, Che Yon, has graduated as a qualified pilot from the Cabair Flight Training School in the UK.
Che left St Helena in 2007 to commence training as a Pilot and embarked on an intensive 22-month training programme. This covered the theory and practical aspects to becoming a Pilot. After many months of hard work, including the flying of aeroplanes, Che has been awarded his Airline Transport Pilots licence. This includes a commercial pilot’s licence and will allow Che to act as pilot in command of a single pilot aircraft, or as co-pilot in an aircraft requiring multiple flight crew.
Che started training at the Ground School where he concentrated for six months on the theory. This saw him cover 13 subjects which included the principles of flight and aviation law, among others. After successfully completing this part of the course, he attended Flight School. Here, Che started flying single engine aircrafts before moving on to the more demanding twin-engine and instrument based flying.
Che is extremely pleased with his success and said “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the School Leavers Scholarship Committee, in particular the former Chief Education Officer, Miss Pamela Lawrence and the Education Department as a whole, for giving me the opportunity to carry out my studies.”
Lilla Oliver, Chief Education Officer said: “We are extremely proud of Che's achievement. He has worked hard to get to where he is today and is a shining example of a successful student who carried out his schooling on St Helena. On behalf of the Education Department I wish Che every success for the future."
Che is now a qualified pilot and is aiming to gain further work experience in the UK.
