In Sung 22 sinks on route to Montevideo

On Monday June 29th GSGSSI received notification that the fishing vessel In Sung 22 had sunk on Saturday June 27th at position 50° 57.4’ S, 37° 42.7’ W. The location was approximately 180 miles north of South Georgia over deep-water (> 4000 m).
The Insung 22 had caught fire on June 16th whilst fishing for toothfish in South Georgia waters. She was initially towed to Cumberland Bay (South Georgia) by the FV Argos Froyanes. There were no serious injuries in the fire and all crew were temporarily accommodated at King Edward Point. The fire continued to burn on In Sung 22 and on Monday June 22nd she left Cumberland Bay under tow from the reefer MV Euro Frost, bound for Montevideo.
On Wednesday June 24th the tow-line parted in heavy seas and the MV Euro Frost was not able to reattach the tow line.
The In Sung 22 carried light fuel oil (MGO) and, with the vessel sinking in deep-water, the likely environmental impacts are not considered great. The GSGSSI will monitor the location of the sinking for any indication of debris or oil.
