ARMED FORCES DAY MARKED IN THE FALKLANDS

Armed Forces day may have been Saturday, 27 June 2009 but observances have been going on since Tuesday, 23 June, when School Children, Councillors members of the public and some Military went to Government House for a special flag rising. Teas, coffee as well as cakes and savouries were served at Government House after the event.
On Friday evening a special reception for veterans and their spouses was held at Government House. The Acting Governor Mr Paul Martinez, in his remarks mentioned that veterans in London had marched over Tower Bridge on Monday and he called to mention the remarks of Lt Col (Ret) Mike Brey, who said that our Armed Forces were second to none and that unique demands were put on them throughout history.
The special Armed Forces Day Flag was raised on Victory Green next to the Falkland Islands flag on Saturday morning. According to the Acting Governor Mr Paul Martinez, the flag will be taken by the FPV Pharos to South Georgia where it will be flown at King Edward Point. After its return to the Falklands, it will be given to Lookout Lodge.
To top things off, there was a hootenanny held in Miller’s Bar with players and singers adding to the atmosphere of the evening which included a fair amount of dancing and a good time had by all.
