Around 850 Letters Say Option 'A' And Airport Now!

The St Helena Herald has learnt that the island-based campaign to 'Save Our Airport' has more than doubled the number of its signed letters in support of Option A over the past week. The total now stands at around 850! The letters call on the Government to deliver on its 2005 promise and provide an airport NOW. Speaking to the St Helena Herald, campaign organiser Dorothy Warren said:

"Radio St Helena quickly and rightly picked up this week on the indication from DFID consultant Rosemary Stevenson that we'll definitely get Option 'C' if there is little or no response to the consultation process. As you know, Option 'C' would mean putting off any decision for up to 5 years and would be an awful outcome for St Helena and its people. That's why it's so important for Saints and others to register their views, even if they're understandably fed up with having to do so. Already, in addition to direct approaches to Rosemary and to the UK Government, we now have close to 850 signed letters for Option A. Their message is loud and clear: YES to an airport NOW, but NO to yet further delay!"

For those yet to sign up, copies of the letters are available in Jasper's Cards and Gifts shop in Napoleon Street. Those on Ascension and the Falklands can sign through Jean Fowler and Nicky Francis respectively. Other overseas can download the letter from Darrin and Sharon Henry's website and send it directly to DfID in London. The website address is www.capricorn-studios.com Dorothy and husband Clive will follow up their support for Option A in the UK next month. Dorothy added:

"The last thing I'd expected was to become involved in a 'Save Our Airport' campaign! But this issue is just too important to ignore. The whole future of our Island and its community is at stake here. I urge everyone to please support our campaign and sign up now. It may well be our very last chance to move on from economic dependency and to set St Helena on a course to real progress, opportunities and self-sufficiency."
