Governor Hollamby to Address Tristanians on RMS Issue

Tristanians have other ways to get on and off the Island.  They have a joint venture with a South African Fisheries Company that allows them cheaper freight and passenger rates from South Africa. Here they are launching a Rescue Boat , "Atlantic Dawn" that was gifted to them by HMG.

Governor Hollamby arrived on Tristan da Cunha on Wednesday 21 January and while there, he will be speaking about the visit of the RMS St Helena to the Island.

Normally, the RMS visits Tristan every January, but with recent changes to the shipping schedule, this visit will not take place next year.

The decision to stop visits to Tristan was made after careful consideration by the St Helena Government, and it was noted that Tristanians have not been relying on the ship to carry passengers and cargo to their Island.

Governor Hollamby stressed that the changed schedule will not affect either the UK’s or St Helena’s relationship with Tristan da Cunha. Her Majesty’s Government and Governor Hollamby will remain in contact with Tristan via telephone, fax, email and inmarsat and it will still be possible for people to visit Tristan, if they travel to Cape Town and take alternative shipping from there. There are also regular visits to the Island by cruise ships and these are expected to continue in the future.
