This week Commander British Forces Air Commodore Gordon Moulds MBE was one of the first to sample the newly refurbished NAAFI complex at MPC. The Gull and Penguin bar and shop, the Sports bar, Coffee Forum, Dolphin Bar, Dolphin Shop and the bowling alley have all been in for the full refurbishment treatment.

Air Commodore Moulds highlighted the importance of the £700,000 refurbishment by saying, “It will undoubtedly prove to be very popular amongst the personnel based here, and is a clear demonstration of the value placed upon service welfare by both the NAAFI and the Armed Forces”.

The Gull and Penguin bar refurbishment includes a new floor covering, replacement of all furniture, new bar serving area and an improved layout.  Though the Gull and Penguin bar was formally re-opened by the Chief of Joint Operations, Air Marshal Sir Stuart Peach in May, the bowling alley has also had new furniture, carpeting and decoration.

NAAFI Operations Manager Dave Saunders was keen to point out that throughout the construction phase, NAAFI has kept one shop and one bar facility open at all times to ensure continuation of the service.

Whilst speaking to BFBS presenter Glen Mansell, Air Commodore Moulds said “The BFSAI NAAFI Refurbishment Project represents a significant commitment by both the NAAFI and the Services to provide first class welfare facilities for service and Falkland Island personnel based in this operational theatre”.

Seven members of the Falkland Island Government including Chief Executive, Tim Thorogood were able to use the newly refurbished facilities during their visit this week.
