On Tuesday Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC) hosted a friendly rugby game against the crew of the departing HMS Manchester. The keenly contested game played in light, but chilly winds saw good camaraderie and game spirit by both sides.

On Tuesday Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC) hosted a friendly rugby game against the crew of the departing HMS Manchester. The keenly contested game played in light, but chilly winds saw good camaraderie and game spirit by both sides.
In the first half MPC had the edge, but squandered several chances through overzealous play, quickly finding that one RAF player would struggle to run through several Navy players, even if they thought they were quick.
The second half was packed with incident, including several strong tackles and more creative play within the rucks and mauls. The Navy captain and number 9, Leading Communicator ‘Pony’ Moore, helped to maintain the pressure on MPC by playing a kicking game and winning several lineouts. MPC were forced to tighten the play in their pack after HMS Manchester showed renewed effort in that area. However, greater experience in the backs showed for MPC and the score line continued to tick over.
The final scoreline 65-0 to MPA does not reflect the passion and effort the Navy side showed, nor how close play was between the packs. Special mention should be made of the referee, a volunteer known only as Stretch, who showed good authority early on and who maintained a friendly and fair atmosphere throughout the game.
After the match Navy players were invited into the lounge to relax and socialise before retuning to prepare for their long journey home. MPC players were grateful for the chance to play and look forward to games against HMS Gloucester, when she arrives in Falkland waters soon. MPC player Flight Lieutenant Andy Cartwright said “These games are vital to establishing and maintaining a good working atmosphere“.
MPC is establishing a mini internal league and training program and also look to play occasional games against visiting sides and local teams. Anyone interested in playing rugby should contact the gymnasium on 73107.
