HRH the Princess Royal arrived at Mount Pleasant at approximately 1630hrs on Monday, 23 March 2009. She was accompanied on the journey by her husband Admiral Timothy Lawrence.
On Tuesday Admiral Lawrence, who had his own programme, left Government House. HRH, however, toured the new police station offices and the old prison wing and unveiled a plaque to open the new Police Station Extension.
Next on her walk around town was the Infant/Junior School where the Princess Royal was presented with a bouquet by Master Liam Jaffray (4) and Miss Eleanor Rozee (4). The School Choir performed and HRH had the opportunity to view school projects on Albatross (Saunders Island) Wildlife (Watch Group), Camp Education and the Lafonia History project. She also met the teachers and chatted with outgoing Director of Education Mrs Barbara Booth during her last official engagement.
Falkland Islands Fire and Rescue Station was next on the venue with the Princess Royal meeting the Chief Fire Officer, Mr Gardner Fiddes and touring the station.
Her Royal Highness then visited the Falkland Islands Community School where she was received by Head Teacher Mr Alistair Baldwin. She viewed the Penguin Project Display and a geography project. There was an opportunity to join a School Council Meeting as well as a leatherwork class in progress. Miss Chloe Ford presented a gift to the Princess Royal during the class period. HRH also listened to GCSE Music students perform a short music recital.
Before lunch the Princess Royal visited Liberty Lodge where she was met by the Director of the Falklands Veterans Foundation Mr “Smoky” Cole. After a tour of the Lodge she was invited to sign the visitors’ book.
In the afternoon the Princess Royal visited the Headquarters Falkland Islands Defence Force. She then travelled to Cape Pembroke and visited the lighthouse and Merchant Marine Memorial where she laid a wreath.
In the evening the Princess Royal presented the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award to Mr Zoran Zuvic as well as the Chief Scout’s Gold Award to Mr. Daniel McGill (15) and Mr Julian Yon (15).
Dinner with the Legislative Assembly at the Malvina House Hotel ended day two of the visit.
