RAM AND BULL SALE TO BE HELD AT SALADERO

By J. Brock (FINN)

The National Stud Flock Ram Sale and the National Beef Herd Bull Sale will be held at Saladero, Wednesday, 18 March 2009.  Billed as the annual stock sale that allows Falkland Islands Farmers the opportunity to purchase high quality performance recorded stock that will achieve genetic gain for their flocks and herds the sale has become an annual event.  Sheep and Bull Inspection begins at 0800 with the sale commencing at 1030am

On offer are NSF Polwarth Shearling Rams, NSF Elite Ex-stud Sires, Afrino Shearling Rams Dhone Merino Shearling Rams, SAMM Shearling Rams and ET Angus Bulls.  Two performance tested, embryo transfer bred, 2.5 year old NBH Angus Bulls will be auctioned at this year’s sale.

Faecal Egg Counts:  This year for the first time the DOA are looking at Faecal egg counts (FEC).  FEC can be seen as a measure of a sheep’s resistance to internal parasites.  A low FEC means the sheep is better at avoiding a worm problem means.  This may be of particular importance on organic farms where the option to treat worms chemically is restricted but is of relevance to all farms.  Low FECs are relatively heritable so such rams should breed more resistant offspring.
