Brian Binley MP Responds to Argentine Critics

Brian Binley MP has received several emails from upset Argentineans about his visit to the Falklands, please find below the response he has sent back to them:

Thank you for your note. What a pity you should feel so concerned.  Can I suggest that you read the history of the Falklands and then you will know that your country's major claim is based on a Papal Bull issued in the 15th Century which effectively split up the world  between Spain and Portugal. You will clearly recognise that my country and indeed almost every other country in the world has never  recognised that Papal Bull as being relevant to the control of nation  states or indeed the claim of any nation to own any given piece of  land. It is secondly worth noting that Argentina has never had any residency claims to the Falkland Islands in the islands long history except for the rather sad occurrence of 1982.

I therefore appeal to you to make representations to your own Government on the basis that we are neighbours in an important area of

the South Atlantic and if your government were to put aside their  ill-conceived claims and work peacefully in harmony with the United  Kingdom we would be able to develop partnerships that were in the  interests of the people of both nations but especially including the  Falkland islanders. Now wouldn't that be a more grown up way for  neighbours to act.
