On Saturday familiarisation visit being undertaken by a representative from the Clinica Alemana began with a meeting at the Chamber of Commerce Function Room with members of the Cancer Support and Awareness Trust.

Dr Eleonora Horvath, Head of Mammography at the Clinica Alemana, in Santiago and her daughter, Monika Horvath are in the Falklands between 21-28/2/09.

Dr Horvath explained that it was crucial to have a preliminary visit prior to the mammography team visiting next year in February - March 2010 to carry out a breast screening programme.  She went on to say that organisation was essential to having a successful visit by the team in that organising the visit and the appointments, each lasting 20 minutes, was logistically complicated.

What Dr Horvath wants most is a complete service, not just a scan and basic report.  This takes organisation and forward planning.  What she envisages is the kind of service available in Clinica Alemana.  “We need to get the maximum result we can possibly get,” she said.

During her welcome speech Mrs Theresa Lang thanked Dr Horvath for using her holiday time to come to the Falklands for the preliminary visit.  Dr Diggle mentioned that there was a Chilean member of staff who could help not only with basic translation but who also knew the medical terms used by the coming team.  The Cancer Support and Awareness Trust is fortunate to have Ms Nancy Jennings who is a fluent Spanish speaker,

A full programme has been arranged for Dr Horvath including visits to the community school and the Seamen’s Mission.  A public meeting has also been arranged at the Chamber of Commerce.  H. E. the Governor Mr Alan Huckle and Mrs Huckle will host a dinner for Dr Horvath while she is in the Falklands.

The local Cancer Support & Awareness Trust have arranged a public meeting at the Chamber of Commerce between 5-7pm on Friday 27th Feb 09 for an informal question & answer session with Dr Horvath about the process of having a mammogram, breast cancer and related issues, all are welcome to attend.

For further information then please contact Alison on 22264, Theresa on 21235 or Andrew on 22722.
