Planning for Rockfall Protection in Jamestown

With grateful thanks for the funding from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the Department For International Development, plans are going ahead to carry out pilot, rockfall protection works in Jamestown.

Bobby Essex, Project Manager for the works, said that good progress is being made. In particular, he said that the bulk of the survey work has been completed. This was carried out by personnel from Triton Surveys, High-Point Rendell and CAN France.

The team is now carrying out closer inspection of the cliffs surrounding Jamestown and all of this will help them decide on the best methods of rockfall protection.

While these inspections are taking place, there will be some delays on Ladder Hill Road. The road has not been closed, but Banksmen in radio contact with those on the hillside, are stationed at strategic points to stop traffic for very short periods until it is safe to continue.

Speaking earlier today, Bobby said “road users are asked to be tolerant during this time and any inconvenience is regretted.”

He added “hopefully, the pilot works, which is essentially a training exercise for local workers,  will commence soon. But, this should see the introduction of a small degree of rockfall protection measures at the chosen location.”

The pilot works are due to be completed by 8 March 2009.
