Bronwen Yon Appointed Shipping Officer
Bronwen Yon has taken up the post of Shipping Officer for the St Helena Government with immediate effect. She replaces Belinda Beard who will be leaving St Helena this month.
Commenting on her appointment, she said “This is a new challenge for me. I have enjoyed working in the St Helena Audit Service and I am now looking forward to working on shipping matters for SHG.”
Bronwen started work on St Helena in what was then the Audit Department in 1999, before moving to the Office of the Chief Secretary for about 2 years. However, for the past nine years Bronwen’s career has been dedicated to Audit and this has seen her working as Value For Money Audit Manager and more recently, as Internal Audit Manager. In addition to her auditing skills, she has experience in business planning, developing policies and strategies, as well as accounting, management and organisation.
To further her skills, and as part of her professional studies with the Institute of Internal Auditors, Bronwen recently undertook overseas training for five months with the Buckinghamshire County Council in the UK. Bronwen was based in their Governance and Internal Audit Unit and also took the opportunity to attend skills module workshops in London. These workshops concentrated on effective communication and client relations.
As Shipping Officer, Bronwen will work closely with Ernie Manley, Head of the Governors Office and personnel from Andrew Weir Shipping and St Helena Line. Her main role is to ensure the efficient and economic operation of the shipping service to St Helena.
Bronwen will play a lead role in advising Governor Gurr and the Executive Council on shipping policy which will include matters such as passenger management and freight issues. She will also work closely with St Helena Line on monitoring the performance of the shipping services against an agreed business plan. In this role, Bronwen will alert the Governor and Executive Council on any potential deviations from this business plan.
In addition, she will ensure that there are effective communications on shipping matters between the key stakeholders.
As Shipping Officer Bronwen will also analyse passenger numbers and freight shipments and she will review and make recommendations on improving the shipping service to St Helena.
In addition to shipping, Bronwen will also work on a range of other issues including serving on various committees and boards which address wider SHG issues.
