The Law on Employees’ Compensation Could Change
The law on employees’ compensation could change with the recent publication of a draft Bill.
Attorney General, Ken Baddon explained that if the Bill is approved by Legislative Council then compensation entitlements will change as follows:
In the case of permanent injury or the death of an employee, the employee or his or her dependents, as the case may be, will receive periodic payments from the employer. This is different to the current law because only one lump sum payment would be made.
The Bill also proposes that if employees are injured, then the employer should pay for medical expenses including reasonable surgical and pharmaceutical expenses. Under the current law, the employer is only required to pay hospital costs.
Legislative Council will meet in early 2009 to discuss the Bill and if they agree with what is being proposed, it will become law. Between now and then, members of the public can submit written comments to the Attorney General at the Legal Lands and Planning Department or on email pa.lawofficers@legalandlands.gov.sh
Members of the public can also submit comments to their Councillors. The deadline for comments is Thursday 15 January 2008.
