The trustees of the Stanley Seamen’s Mission are pleased to announce that Maurice and Debra Lake have been appointed to succeed Howard and Betty Turner as Co-managers of the Lighthouse Seamen’s Centre at FIPASS.
Maurice and Debbie come originally from East Anglia in UK.
On leaving school, Maurice worked with the Port of Felixstowe in a number of roles - shipping, transport and warehousing - and then finally donned a pair of orange overalls and became a port worker.
For approximately four years Debbie was a Sea Cadet Officer having begun as a parent helper and ended up as a probationer Petty Officer.
More recently Maurice and Debbie have both worked in the caring profession within a mental health project known as the Suffolk MIND Partnership
Their common interests away from the workplace include Gardening, Music, Reading, Cooking and DIY.
Maurice has served as a licensed Reader in the Anglican Church and currently is a Local Preacher within the Methodist Church.
Debbie says, ‘Both Maurice and I have felt for a while that we were being led to undertake a new role. Little did we expect this to be in The Falkland Islands. But we look forward to an exciting challenge, serving seafarers, and sharing God’s love amongst the local community.’
Richard Hines, chair of the Mission Trustees is upbeat: ‘Maurice and Debbie are the ideal couple to build on the solid foundation laid by their predecessors. They begin their new work together on 22nd November. To ease the pressure on everyone whilst the hand-over takes place, the menu at the Lighthouse Centre will be slimmed down. Then, as ‘new management’ takes effect, and other staff are recruited, we can expect some changes. But there’ll always be a warm and sincere welcome to seafarers and locals alike. The trustees look forward with anticipation to more fruitful years ahead.’
