WORK CONTINUES ON OCEAN 8

By J. Brock (FINN)

Korean divers from the M/V Tasnui are working to plug up the remaining oil leaks on Ocean 8 as well as pumping fuel from tanks on the sunken vessel.  Director of fisheries, Dr John Barton told FIRS that there were initial difficulties but holes had been drilled into the tanks and fuel was being removed from the 17 tanks on the Ocean 8.  He said that the Marine gas-oil could be pumped at about 5 tonnes an hour and the tanks carried between 5 and 10 tonnes each.  Dr Barton went on to say that some tanks had little oil in them and he wondered where it could be now.

Divers disturbed some of the oil that has escaped but have plugged them up.  Fisheries officials are monitoring the situation and a vessel, the Protogat, has been monitoring any pollution coming from the vessel to the shore.

Statistics on how much fuel was taken from the Ocean 8 will be compiled when the operation is completed
