Government House announced today that  Mr John Trevaskis has been appointed as Senior Magistrate for the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands and the British Antarctic Territory.

According to the press release Mr Trevaskis has 27 years experience of practice which includes criminal defence, civil and family proceedings, Military Law, immigration tribunals, Licensing Law and Fishery prosecutions for DEFRA.  He is taking a sabbatical from his appointments with the Ministry of Justice to work in the Falklands for a period of two years. He was born and still lives in Cornwall, and is looking forward very much to living and working in the South Atlantic, and exploring the Falkland Islands. “I have read about the Falkland Islands, and spoken to my predecessors about their experiences there, and I recognise much in common with the part of the United Kingdom where I have lived and worked, and also much I shall need to learn”

Mr Trevaskis is due to arrive in the Falklands on 10th November 2008 and will later be joined by his wife, Jane. They have 2 adult daughters in the United Kingdom. John and Jane share interests in music, walking and meeting people, and John is a keen golfer and cricketer, as well as an ex-player and now keen spectator of rugby.
